First Communion: Organizing From Education To Communion Dresses

By Janet J. Bonnell

Young girls are typically excited about communion dresses rather than anything else but there are other important things that you will need to take time planning. Spring is when the actual event occurs, which is around the ages seven and eight or the second grade. Nevertheless, plans will need to be put into motion before second grade actually begins.

The requirement for participating in the first communion involves the completion of a religion education course that meets the demands of the church. This means that the course will need to be completed before the First Communion can take place. Typically, these classes require children to memorize certain prayers, such as the Lord's Prayer. But the basic purpose of the classes is to discover the significance of the religion. Confession is typically a required portion of this religion class.

The ceremony date for your little girl's first communion is set close to the completion of the class. You may not have a choice for the date or you might be able to choose a convenient date depending on your church and the size of the first communion class. But, as time approaches this date, you have a little work to do. Up until now, you really just had to enroll your child in the religion education class and make sure she arrived. But now you really need to get some work done.

To plan for the unique day, your daughter will need a communion dress, which must be white to symbolize purity. The most commonly forgotten items that must go with the dress are white dress shoes and socks. In some cases, your daughter may have to wear a white veil and gloves as well. A few families follow tradition when it comes to these dresses, passing them down from generation to generation. Other families make the day special for their daughter by allowing her to pick out her own dress. Regardless of how it is obtained, whether it is purchased, borrowed or passed down, the dress only needs to meet two requirements. The first requirement is that the church has to approve of the style. The other requirement is only that your daughter is comfortable and looks back on the day with happy memories.

In addition to all of this, you may also need to plan a family celebration. Depending on what you prefer, you can have a large gathering or just something small and simple. It is just a special day to celebrate for your daughter and this should be done in any way that your family finds most enjoyable. A special gift is usually given to the child who partakes in her first communion. The most frequent gifts consist of a bible, rosary or cross necklace.
