Is The Sabbath Day Saturday Or Sunday How To Tell

By Jimmy Twyman

This is an extremely undecided topic inside the Christian society. The misunderstanding comes from a critical misinterpretation of a New Testament scripture. Nevertheless, the heart of the Sabbath topic really comes down to a "marriage." The Bible explains what the Sabbath day is, what it is for, what to do on the Sabbath, and it even explains what the larger spiritual meaning of Sabbath day is. In this brief article we are not going to go into all of those; but will answer the question at hand. What does Jesus say about the Sabbath?

In the beginning, God laid out the plans of His work and began to bring them to pass. The last day of God's plans was the seventh day, a day of rest that was made holy, blessed, and set apart (Genesis 2 v3). It was made holy because the Lord God rested from all His work He had done in the creation. There are hundreds of Biblical references to the Sabbath day. One of the larger landmarks on this topic comes in Exodus chapter twenty, when the Lord visited the earth in His strength and power.

The God of Israel made this visit to the Israelites to personally delivery His Ten Commandments, the agreement with humanity. The Sabbath is officially put to and in order here. The Sabbath is in the top four commandments of the covenant. We are supposed to learn by rote the Sabbath day and keep it Holy. We are reminded the Sabbath day is the seventh day of the week, no work is to be done (except work that pertains to God Almighty - Today because this is not a global rule, you may have to work your job to stay from being fired or released.)

The scholars of the Biblical world will say this was a thing in the Old Testaments and not required for the new; primarily in the New Testament after the death of Jesus Christ. While Jesus was alive the seventh day Sabbath was still being kept and honored. It was kept customarily by Jesus Christ Himself (Luke 4 v16). When Jesus was killed, the women followed to see where His body would lay and they left to keep the Sabbath day as commanded by Moses, before returning to do the ointments and spices for the body (Luke 23 v56). It was not just JESUS custom to keep the Sabbath; Paul also had this custom as well, even after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 17 v2, Acts 16 v13).

In all places Paul ventured, he reasoned and taught people on the Sabbath day as read in Acts chapter 13 and chapter 14. When Jesus healed people and taught people during His ministry, most of it (if not all) took place on the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week. This is because the Sabbath is a day of rest. We all know that when the body receives rest, it can heal and reprogram itself better. Further, Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Sabbath day. Is He your Lord? In the book of Isaiah, it says a man is blessed that holds fast to the God Almighty's Sabbath and stops him or herself from profaning it.

The Sabbath is implausibly major to the God of Israel. Israel's God plainly makes known in Exodus chapter 31, the Sabbath is an agreement forever and an emblem between the God of Israel and His people forever. His people are the children of Israel that is keeping the ways of the Most High. The query for this editorial was what does the New Testament say about the Sabbath? The positions above are more than enough for now. We will not go into when and where the Sabbath day changes to first day of the week, Sunday? This alteration came from the early Church of Rome as oppose to the Church of Jerusalem. This divergence has to be made clear for you to understand. Jesus only knows of a seventh day Sabbath and made it known as a covenant forever.
