Decorative Wall Crosses Are Beautiful Symbols

By Mari Orr

Decorative wall crosses are simple structures and not necessarily expensive. However, it is the very simplicity of the objects that gives them their weight of symbolism. For Christians they are structurally symbolic of the whole reason for life.

The rough wooden cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified was probably not particularly different from the hundreds of similar crosses upon which people were put to death. Probably, many were crudely fashioned from the branches of trees and stuck into the ground with a person nailed to them, to die a slow and lingering death that would terrify people who witnessed the horror.

Jesus Christ lived in the Roman Empire where popular entertainment took the form of watching others being put to death or tortured. In such a world a message of 'love your neighbor' must have seemed extraordinarily radical and revolutionary, almost beyond understanding. Reflecting on this helps one to understanding how the cross became such a powerful symbol.

When Alexander the 'Great' and Genghis Khan perpetrated horrible acts of cruelty there was no moral standard of love against which they could judge themselves. Brutality knew no bounds because there were no philosophical boundaries. After the life of Christ atrocities continued, often in His name, but public and private consciences had to be judged by a different standard.

The cross may be a simple symbol but it takes its power from the belies and emotions associated with it. People die willingly for symbols but only if they have meaning deep within the minds and souls of individuals. Jesus recognized this when he permitted a humble woman to anoint him with expensive oil. His gesture vividly portrays the ascendancy of spiritual over material material considerations.

decorative wall crosses (http://www.ironnature.com) can add considerably to the spiritual and aesthetic satisfaction derived from the presence of the sign in a building or room. In many cases the material from which the sign is made may be sufficient in themselves. In other cases elaborate embellishments can succeed by signifying the esteem in which the symbol is held. Much depends on individual preference. Fortunately a wide variety of samples that might appeal to individual tastes can be viewed online.
