There's a global trend arising in the naked church, where people are attending their places of worship nude. There are many Christians criticizing them for their nudity, but these churches have an innocent reason for shedding their clothes. Some outside the Christian religion are also being extremely critical of them.
The admonishments are a result of people's equation of sex with nudity. The movements don't have any focus on sex at all. Rather, the priority of the Christian nudist and others in the naked church is on 'undisguised Christianity and authenticity.'
There are some churches inside nudist colonies and others that aren't. The Christian nudist living in these colonies never dresses, and worship is no exception. Others outside colonies only go without their clothing for services.
While every facility has different philosophies and reasons for nudity, there seems to be one overriding focus for what they're doing. In a sense, the movement is an attempt to get away from the current enormity of the Mega Church's focus on money. These are affluent worship places that, it's said, are laying off their workers to overcome the recession while simultaneously spending on their million dollar buildings.
The nudists claim that these institutions are placing too much priority on outer aspects and the institution's machinery. The nudist worshipers want to think instead about the desires of their God. They claim that their members are family and compassion oriented.
They also say that they shed their clothing to rid themselves of the societal judgments that fashions bring. This brings about a more stress free environment in which every attendee is equal. They say that worship wasn't invented by people so they want to strip it of that element.
Visitors to nudist colonies are rising despite the global recession. Obviously, people like what they're doing. There's also a growing internet community for the Christian nudist. This has established a growing and active internet church complete with chat rooms and forums for interaction.
These movements are all innocent, but there are others with a dark side. Certain preachers are having sexualized services and bringing masked sexual activities into their worship spaces. These are rare and completely separate from the services held by the nudist Christian community.
Some worship places are 'clothing optional, ' This means that they can choose whether they want to wear clothes or not, whereas a true nudist place bans clothing. The naked church is beginning a revolution that will, perhaps, move religion away from its growing material focus.
