Spiritual Growth: The Spiritual Challenge Nowadays

By Mercy Nikenya

Spiritual growth has become something hard since the lifestyle has changed a lot. Technology has attracted lots of attention since it focuses on the physical needs. This has raised questions on how we can balance spiritual and physical aspects.

To grow spiritually is to look inward.

Introspection is far more than just recalling what you did during the past. It is about looking at your feelings, motivations and beliefs. This process is fundamentally about taking time to have a look at the choices you made, your relationships, your best friends (http://www.nikenya.com/Best-Friends.html) , your good personality traits and the bad characters that you need to get rid of. Introspection can be learned but you need to be focused, objective and ready to pardon yourself before you introspect.

Developing your potentials is to grow spiritually.

Science and religion differ on how they describe human spirit. Science view it as part of an individual while religion view people as the spirit itself. All religions teach folk how to master oneself. Values, beliefs, experiences, morality and rules are the factors that aid in the process of spiritual growth..

According to psychologists, self-actualization is to realise one's potential. After Maslow discovered many human needs like security, esteem, self-transcendence, cognitive and aesthetic, James divided them into three: spiritual, emotional and material. Growing spiritually demands that you achieve all these needs. Religion views the process as a way of serving God while psychology sees it as a conclusion on its own.

Searching for meaning is to grow spiritually.

Faiths that believe strongly in God, suggest that the goal of life is to serve Him. Theories suggested by psychologists say that we are the ones who give meaning to life. When you were born you didn't know the meaning of life but you have got to grow in spirit to give it meaning. Discovering the meaning of life means there are values and beliefs that you will get rid of. You have to live for a purpose so the intellectual, physical and emotional potentials you have are tapped.

To grow spiritually is to recognize interconnections.

Religions have stressed a lot on the relationship between living and non living things. Thus we call those around us 'brothers and sisters' even though they are not related in real sense. Other religions like Islam and Christianity talk about the relationship between a higher being and humans.

Science in addition has explained the relationship that exists between living and non living things with the help of evidence from evolution theories. This idea has been brought out clearly in the ecology documentaries. They all have the same message but they have different evidence to support it.

Psychology also talks about connectedness as a characteristic of self-transcendence. According to Maslow, this is the highest human need. You will be respectful and humble of nature the sooner you realize your connection.

Spiritual growth is a process. We pass and fail at times, but what matters is that we learn a lesson from the circumstances. These lessons are the ones which will assist you in the spiritual development process.
