Choosing The Right Wiccan Altar Supplies Need Not Be Tricky

By Tamera Keith

When it comes to setting up a sacred space in which to practise Wicca rituals it can be hard for newcomers to know where to begin. The key factor to remember is that you want things to be usable and functional, rather than flamboyant and ornate. Finding the right Wiccan altar supplies comes down to choosing objects which are appropriate and manageable.

The first item that you will need to set up a shrine is an altar itself. There is no need to choose something ornate and gaudy, nor does it need to be massively big. You need a stable surface which will fit into the space that you are using, and has enough space to contain everything that you are likely to use.

After you have chosen some kind of table or other stable surface then you can start to choose the objects needed to symbolise each of the four directions, which in turn reflect each of the four elements. The north, the direction of the element of earth, can be represented by a container of soil or sand placed in the relevant part of the shrine. Other easily obtained objects can represent each of the other elements and directions too without causing you too much anxiety when it comes to finding them.

The east side of the shrine is the direction associated with the air, and an incense stick can be used in this part of your sacred space. The south is the direction associated with fire, and this can be represented by a candle or a piece of burned charcoal. Water is the element associated with the west, and can be represented in your scared space by a bowl or similar, filled with the element itself.

Candles are another important part of the set-up of any sacred space such as this. Depending on your personal views and practises, you may want to use candles to represent the Goddess and the God, or they can be used for the directions. Always make sure that you have matches or a lighter to hand in order to light the candles or the situation can become awkward.

The athame is a kind of ritual knife which forms part of the tool kit of many pagan practitioners. Having an athame on your location is also a good idea, as is keeping your wand nearby. A wand is used to direct energy, so if you use one in your rituals, keep it near your set up.

The Book of Shadows, if you use it, should also be kept close to where you intend to practise your rituals. Keeping it safely stowed away somewhere secure might see you forget about it, and then struggle when the time comes to use it. Stow it in a drawer under the altar or a nearby cupboard so it is always nearby when you need it.

Finding the right Wiccan altar supplies (http://www.mysticmoondance.com) is therefore not a difficult process, if you known what you are looking for. Keeping your set up functional should always be uppermost in your mind, rather than creating some flamboyant and ornate environment. You need to have enough space to use the objects you have chosen correctly and comfortably.
