The Great African American Spirituals

By Celia Hall

The black person who wants to understand history better will listen to the African American spirituals. The music industry is now playing the hymns now more than ever since we are living in dire times. The songs are of true faith which help people endure the hardships that will happen in a lifetime. Older people love the songs and they will always play them on Sunday mornings.

Youngsters living in the United States are now being taught these great songs which helped their ancestors make it through rough times in history. A variety of artists have performed these classics and the younger crowd is remaking them. Elder Walter, Paul Robeson, Howard Roberts, Mahalia Jackson and the Fisk Jubilee Singers have all done brilliant versions of these songs.

Classics like "Go Down Moses", "Soon I will Be Done", "Pharaoh's Army Got Drowned", "Take My Hand Precious Lord", "Swing Low Swing Chariot" and "Amazing Grace" are the ones most remembered. The artists that wrote and sung them felt that there was something special to be said in the words. Preachers will often let their choirs sing these songs at church. Everyone at mass will often know the words to these songs since they have been so important to many people throughout the generations.

Blacks who are constantly struggling with life and the bad economy are often uplifted when they hear the song "Amazing Grace". It gives them the strength to go on and to hold onto the strong belief they have in God. It is a song that manages to help someone face all of the bad situations.

When speaking about the Pharaoh and his army people often remember the great scene which happened in the The Ten Commandments which showed how Moses used his powers to destroy them. This song helps black people to face their fears and to realize that all problems will disappear with the power of prayer. This particular song also reminds them that blacks were once held in captivity as the Hebrews were in biblical times. With the strength of God they learned how to survive as Moses' people did.

A person who is ready to wrap up life will like the song "Soon I Will Be Done". The song tells about the things in life that are temporary and how people need to let go of valuables when facing death. Getting your life in order is an important message in this particular song.

The song "Take My Hand Precious Lord" is a song that anyone can relate to. We all need a helping hand at some point and sometimes life seems to get the best of us. God can bring us through the most difficult times that seem so hopeless.
