There is nothing like old Negro spirituals to get people thinking about the past and present. If you are one that likes to decipher the past, then listen one of these songs will help you uncover the feelings of those who were enslaved years ago. Many African American people still listen to the songs to try to understand the past. Other people just enjoy singing the old hymns because it makes them feel closer to their ancestors.
Times are a lot different and most of these songs are no longer used in churches today. Once in a while you will find some African American choirs that will sing a hymn or two but not very often. Most people are still trying to put the past behind. Many people feel the songs are from a time when things were too difficult for the African American communities.
African Americans who lived during those difficult times wanted some of the music to be uplifting or away to escape. There was a lot of musical talent in the community. There was no writing and reading allowed so many of them had to memorize these songs and keep them close in their heart.
Generations who still keep the music present in their lives today wonder about the lives of their ancestors. What was really the story behind the hymns? No one really know but the people who were living in those days. One things is clear those songs had some type of meaning for them.
Singing was away for people to escape and believe that a change would be coming. Most of the songs looked to a higher being to guide them in a better life or way of living. A lot of slaves actually communicated with one another through songs. If a slave wanted to relate a message to another person without their overseer knowing what they were talking about they would do it in a song.
There is a lot to know about each word in the lyrics. Many people who knew all the details have long been dead. The younger generations only know what they have read or heard in stories from older relatives. Some of the stories may be true while others may not. Most stories that have been heard seem to be very similar.
There is one true thing about the lyrics is that a lot of heart was put into them. Whoever came up with each song apparently had a message to convey. Whether the message was meant to carry a message between each other or make one another feel in better spirits it usually would do the job.
There is no one who can really decipher the meaning of the Negro spirituals (http://www.calvinearl.com) during earlier years. There is only speculation and the opinion of others that live on. Regardless of the reason for the lyrics the music is still one that has great substance behind it. Only those people who lived during those difficult times would be able to explain the lyrics.
