There is a movement that has been making itself felt in Christian religious life for nearly 40 years. It is called New Monasticism, and it holds the possibility of breathing new life into modern religion. This new movement affects both Protestant and Catholic Christianity.
Monastic life has always been associated with the Catholic faith. Few Catholics have attempted to actually practice the disciplines found in the monasteries. The idea of spending some time isolated from society in the interests of one's faith would probably be foreign to most Protestants. Many people of all varieties of Christianity seemed interested in giving monastic practices and try.
Hopefully, the new aim will emerge amongst Christians who take this movement seriously. People who are part of religious life and find that this new influence give them a new attitude to the secular community. People whose religion is normally confined to Sunday services would find that they are bringing their faith to their daily life.
Making use of disciplines that began in monasteries does not mean people have to start wearing robes and practicing austerity.
