Joining a Summer Mission Trip to the Philippines

By Phil Smethurst

Have you ever considered taking a pilgrimage in which you share your religion? If so , then perhaps a summer mission trip to the Philippians would be an ideal way to start your travels. The Philippines consist of over 7,000 islands divided into three categorical geographical locations. These are Mindanao, Luzon and Visayas with the capital being Manila. With over 90 million folks it ranks 12th in the word for population. This suggests there is no need for folk to serve, and numerous remote locations where assistance from a missionary would be welcome. A quick Web search will bring up quite a listing of internet sites (http://www.overlandmissions.com) that offer journeys to these remote locations.

The vast majority of Philippine folk are Roman Catholic, with only about 10% being Muslim. The goal in travelling to such a location would be not just evangelical but also supporting discipleship and working with local churches. While there are many languages throughout the islands the main two are Filipino and English so you shouldn't have any trouble finding someone that can help with communication.

In the countryside you'll find folk growing coconuts, sugarcane and rice while in the cities folk busily make clothing, medicine and electronic goods. The land is loaded in beauty and history, each of which are worth learning about during your excitement. Visit the underground river system or maybe see the ancient town of Cebu. Don't forget to exchange your money for Pesos on arrival at the airport.

Throughout the Philippines there are several occasions to sing, evangelise, minister and offer your private testimony - not just at church but in marketplaces, offices and schools. In addition you can live your religion by helping folks in the field by offering your time to medical clinics heavily short of additional hands.

Certainly taking a mission trip to the Philippines is not a holiday. There are demands in nearly any summer missionary trip, and living conditions quite tricky. There are bumpy roads and infrequently rough feelings. The issues are there but with the power of Almighty God, you will see incredible changes in yourself and others throughout your visit.
