To properly practice any religion, you need to have the right items. Wiccan altar supplies should be object you have a special connection to. It does not matter what they look like or are made of, as long as they have some type of meaning to you.
It is quite possible to get a feel for something over the Internet if you relax and concentrate for a few minutes. Consider all the electrical impulses that are coursing through your brain at any given moment and the fact that your fingers are dancing over an electronic device. When you are practicing your craft, or worshiping, you are giving off your own energy and receiving some from others; it is the same concept.
You will need to have at least three candles for the altar itself. Two of the candles should be white and set on opposite sides. You could also have ones that are molded to represent the God and Goddess. The third is the one you light to do your bidding. If you are worshiping, it should be white or a color you use to signify yourself. Remember to anoint them before lighting.
It is common to place your athame on the altar too. This knife can be either white or black-handled or unstained wood with runes or symbols carved into it. This is probably the most personal item you will have for your religion and should be chosen carefully.
The incense you use for ceremonies or magic is not the same thing as most store-bought sticks or cones. You need a small dish or censer that can withstand the heat of a small burning piece of charcoal. Fresh or dried herbs are placed on the coal to emit energy in the form of smoke.
Wine or juice is used to make an offering to the God and to earth. Drink from the goblet first and then pour a bit onto the earth. It does not have to be an actual stemmed goblet, just as long as it is something you have a connection with and only use it for this purpose; it can be a plastic mug if you like. If you will need water or a beverage for regular drinking, have another cup nearby, use the goblet only for the ceremony.
In order to have all four elements represented on the altar, many witches will place a small dish of salt on one corner and a small dish of holy water on the other. Although it is not necessary, having all the watchtowers present will offer you protection. You can keep your book of shadows and wand on the worship area. If there is not room for everything you will be using, place objects under the table or next to where you are sitting.
Choosing your Wiccan altar supplies (http://www.mysticmoondance.com) and arranging them is a very personal task. It is important to consecrate each piece before using it. This can be a simple anointing with a purification oil or you can perform a small ceremony to put yourself and the objects in tune with each other. If something does not feel right, get rid of it and find a good replacement.
