The Unheard Voices Of Muslim Women In America

By Natasha Gonzalez

Muslim women in America are facing great odds to be at par with their counterparts in almost all aspects of life. They face challenges everyday that most Americans do not have to come across, issues related to discrimination and ridicule. It is a problem that is looked down upon, but it exists just as much as a contentious issue like racism exists. muslim women in america

Female workers tend to generally earn less money than their male counterparts, no matter the industry. According to Islamic culture, mothers tend to take on the responsibility of being the primary caregivers in their families, in addition to the modern pressure of being bread winners too. This is double pressure, compounded by the fact that they have to bring home less than what their husbands rake in every year.

The cultural practices that their counterparts would practice in other parts of the world are not so well regarded inthe United States. Wearing the hijab, for example, is nearly non existent. A woman that sticks to this culture will face constant ridicule and danger from the community. It even becomes difficult for them to get and maintain employment.

The Islamic community of the United States is extremely diverse. Some immigrate, and these face additional problems like xenophobia. Of course, the scourge of terrorism has done nothing to lessen the obvious dissent that existed towards this community in the first place.

African Americans that are Muslims are also very many. As a race, first of all, this is a community that has been facing persecution for such a long time. For them to be Muslim too adds another layer of problems to their livelihood and peace. They are constant targets of gender and religious discrimination.

Muslim women in America are also facing discrimination from the Islamic community itself. Islam is a religion that is still battling issues related to gender equality and ignorance. It is a religion that seems to still promote the culture of demeaning of this gender.
